BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art
A converted flour mill on the Tyne showing contemporary art.
BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art occupies the former Baltic Flour Mills on the south bank of the River Tyne in Gateshead. The mill was designed in the late 1930s, finished in 1950 and closed in 1984; Ellis Williams Architects won a 1994 competition to convert it, and the gallery opened in July 2002.
BALTIC has no permanent collection and instead presents a changing programme of contemporary art across several gallery floors, with free admission. The top of the 42-metre building offers views over the Quayside, the Gateshead Millennium Bridge and Newcastle.
