Centro Cultural Tijuana (CECUT)
Border-city cultural centre with galleries, a regional history museum and its landmark spherical cinema.
The Centro Cultural Tijuana opened on 20 October 1982 as a federal cultural centre for Mexico's north-western border. Pedro Ramírez Vázquez and Manuel Rosen Morrison set a sand-coloured concrete complex around a plaza, dominated by the spherical projection theatre that Tijuana residents call La Bola. The centre is run by the Secretaría de Cultura and receives well over a million visitors a year, many of them crossing from San Diego County.
Facilities include the Museo de las Californias, which traces the history of the peninsula from prehistory to the twentieth century, a 1,000-seat Sala de Espectáculos, an IMAX dome cinema, an aquarium, a botanical garden, bookshop and library. In 2008 the centre gained El Cubo, a large cube-shaped gallery block for temporary exhibitions that has hosted major loan shows. Programming covers theatre, dance, concerts, film seasons and festivals as well as visual art, with much of it free.
