Fundación Proa
Contemporary art gallery in La Boca, behind an Italianate façade facing the Riachuelo near Caminito.
Fundación Proa opened in 1996 in a late nineteenth-century Italianate house on Avenida Pedro de Mendoza, facing the Riachuelo in La Boca and a short walk from Caminito. The Milanese studio Caruso-Torricella rebuilt the interior between 2006 and 2008, inserting four floors of galleries, an auditorium, a bookshop and a roof terrace behind the retained façade. The gallery reopened in October 2008 with roughly twice its previous exhibition space.
Proa holds no permanent collection and works through loans and co-productions, bringing international modern and contemporary art to Buenos Aires alongside Argentine and Latin American artists. Past exhibitions have covered Marcel Duchamp, Louise Bourgeois, Kandinsky and Ai Weiwei. A second space, PROA21, stands further along the same avenue and is given over to residencies and experimental projects, while the auditorium runs talks, film screenings and concerts.
