Zurab Tsereteli Museum of Modern Art
Three floors of Zurab Tsereteli's painting, graphics and sculpture on Rustaveli Avenue.
The museum, usually shortened to MOMA Tbilisi, was founded in 2012 by Zurab Tsereteli, the Georgian painter, sculptor and monumental artist who also led the Russian Academy of Arts. It occupies a building on Rustaveli Avenue, the city's main boulevard, a short walk from the parliament and the Rustaveli Theatre. The permanent display draws on roughly three hundred of his own works, and the museum also runs a programme of temporary shows, typically eight to twelve a year, by Georgian and visiting artists.
The collection is arranged over three floors by medium: drawings and sketches at the lower level, large enamel and oil paintings above, and a floor devoted to Tsereteli's career, including maquettes for the public monuments he made for Moscow, New York and Tbilisi. Bronze and enamel sculpture is set through the stairwells and courtyard. The displays offer an accessible introduction to twentieth-century Georgian art alongside changing exhibitions of contemporary work.
