Museo Jumex
Contemporary art museum in Nuevo Polanco, built by David Chipperfield for the Colección Jumex.
Museo Jumex is the exhibition building of Fundación Jumex Arte Contemporáneo, established in 2001 by the collector Eugenio López Alonso around the Colección Jumex. Before the museum opened, the collection was shown at a gallery attached to the family's juice factory in Ecatepec. The present building in Nuevo Polanco opened on 19 November 2013 and stands opposite the Museo Soumaya, giving the district two contrasting pieces of contemporary museum architecture within a short walk of each other.
David Chipperfield Architects raised the museum on fourteen slender columns above an open plaza, clad it in local travertine and crowned it with a sawtooth roof that lights the top-floor gallery. The collection holds around three thousand works of international and Mexican contemporary art. Exhibitions alternate between collection displays, monographic shows of living artists and historical surveys, supported by talks, screenings, a research library and an education programme. Entry is free and no booking is required.
