Istanbul Museum of Modern Art
Turkey's first modern and contemporary art museum, in a Renzo Piano building on the Bosphorus at Galataport.
Istanbul Modern opened in 2004 in a converted customs warehouse on the Bosphorus as the first museum in Turkey devoted to modern and contemporary art. It was founded by the Eczacıbaşı family and grew quickly into a hub for exhibitions, film screenings, education programmes and a library, showing Turkish artists from the late Ottoman and early Republican periods alongside international contemporary work. The museum also represents Turkey's modern art abroad through touring exhibitions and partnerships with other institutions.
A permanent home designed by Renzo Piano Building Workshop opened on the same waterfront site in May 2023, as part of the Galataport redevelopment. The building is raised on columns with an aluminium façade that reflects the water, and it is topped by a public roof terrace and a shallow reflecting pool looking towards the historic peninsula. Inside are flexible galleries on two main levels, a photography gallery, a cinema, an amphitheatre, a library and studios for education work.
