The Glucksman
Contemporary art gallery raised on piers among the trees of the University College Cork campus.
The Glucksman, formerly the Lewis Glucksman Gallery, is the public art museum of University College Cork. It opened in 2004 and mounts a changing programme of exhibitions of Irish and international contemporary art, often drawing connections with university research, together with displays from the UCC Art Collection. The gallery has no permanent collection display of its own; instead it works with loans, commissions and university holdings, and runs learning programmes for schools, students and community groups.
The building, by the Dublin practice O'Donnell + Tuomey, is set in the lower grounds of the campus beside the River Lee. A limestone and concrete base carries a timber-clad upper volume that is lifted clear of the ground on piers so that the mature trees and a flood-prone riverside meadow pass beneath it. The galleries are top-lit and arranged around a stair hall with framed views out over the river. The design was shortlisted for the RIBA Stirling Prize in 2005.
