Fondation Maeght
A modern art foundation with works by Miró, Giacometti and Chagall set in Provençal gardens.
The Fondation Maeght was set up by the art dealers Aimé and Marguerite Maeght and opened in 1964 on a pine-covered hill just outside Saint-Paul-de-Vence. It is France's first independent private art foundation, and it holds one of Europe's most important collections of 20th-century painting, sculpture, drawing and graphic art.
The Catalan architect Josep Lluís Sert designed the white concrete and brick buildings, with their distinctive curved roofs, to work closely with the gardens and with artworks made for the site. Giacometti, Miró, Chagall, Braque and Calder all contributed, so the terraces, courtyards and pools are part of the collection, while the galleries host major temporary exhibitions and summer concerts.
