M+
Asia’s museum of visual culture, showing art, design, architecture and moving image on Victoria Harbour.
M+ is Hong Kong's museum of visual culture, set on the Victoria Harbour waterfront in the West Kowloon Cultural District. It opened in November 2021 and gathers art, design, architecture and the moving image of the 20th and 21st centuries under one roof, viewed from a Hong Kong and wider Asian perspective.
The building, designed by Herzog & de Meuron together with Farrells, takes the form of an inverted T: a broad horizontal podium of galleries sits above ground, topped by a slender tower that houses offices, research spaces, dining and gardens. Below ground, the architects turned the awkward space around the Airport Express rail tunnels into a raw exhibition area called the Found Space. The tower's harbour-facing facade carries an LED system that works as a giant screen visible across the water.
Its collection spans thousands of objects, anchored by a major gift of contemporary Chinese art from the Swiss collector Uli Sigg, alongside holdings in Hong Kong visual culture, international design and architecture archives. Beyond long-running collection displays, the museum stages rotating exhibitions, film screenings in its cinemas, free spaces such as the Mediatheque, and a rooftop garden with views over the harbour.
