Musée Unterlinden
Home of the Isenheim Altarpiece, in a medieval convent with a modern extension.
The Musée Unterlinden occupies a 13th-century convent of Dominican nuns in the heart of Colmar, which opened as a museum in 1853. It is the most visited museum in Alsace and is internationally known as the home of the Isenheim Altarpiece by Matthias Grünewald and Nicolas of Haguenau.
Its collections range from archaeology and medieval sculpture to Renaissance painting, Alsatian decorative arts and modern and contemporary art. A contemporary extension by Herzog & de Meuron, linked to the convent by an underground gallery and incorporating the former municipal baths, doubled the exhibition space.
