Olomouc Museum of Art
State art museum with the Museum of Modern Art and the Archdiocesan Museum in Olomouc's castle quarter.
Founded on 5 April 1951 as the art gallery of the Regional Museum in Olomouc, the institution became independent after 1989 and is now run by the Czech Ministry of Culture. It holds more than 96,000 works, from paintings and sculpture to drawings, prints, photography, applied art and architectural designs, making it one of the largest art collections in the country, and it also cares for roughly 105,000 items belonging to the Olomouc Archbishopric.
The museum works from several buildings. The Museum of Modern Art occupies a 1918 block on Denisova street by Jaroslav Kovar Sr, converted for exhibitions in the 1990s. The Olomouc Archdiocesan Museum opened in 2006 in the former chapter deanery beside the cathedral, where HSH architekti inserted new concrete interventions into a Romanesque and Gothic complex. A second Archdiocesan Museum is housed in the Archbishop's Chateau at Kromeriz, and a new Central European Forum building is under construction.
