National Museum of Norway
The Nordic region's largest art museum, holding Norway's national collections of art, architecture and design.
The National Museum was formed in 2003 by merging the National Gallery, the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Museum of Decorative Arts and Design and the National Museum of Architecture. Its purpose-built home at Vestbanen, beside Oslo City Hall and the harbour, opened on 11 June 2022. Designed by the Berlin practice Kleihues + Schuwerk, the low stone-clad building covers about 54,600 square metres and is the largest art museum in the Nordic countries.
Some 6,500 works are shown across roughly ninety rooms on the collection floor, ranging from antiquity and Norwegian romantic landscape painting to modern design and contemporary art. Room 60 holds the museum's version of Edvard Munch's The Scream from 1893, alongside other Munch paintings. On the top floor the Light Hall, a 2,400-square-metre gallery lit by thousands of LEDs behind translucent marble, houses the temporary exhibitions.
