Musée Soulages
A museum devoted to painter Pierre Soulages in his home town.
The Musée Soulages in Rodez, the painter's home town, opened in May 2014 to house the gifts made by Pierre Soulages and his wife Colette. Its collection of more than 500 works and documents traces his whole career, from early walnut stain works on paper and prints to the preparatory cartoons for his stained-glass windows at Conques Abbey and his large black 'outrenoir' canvases.
The building, designed by the Catalan practice RCR Arquitectes with Passelac & Roques, sits at the edge of the Foirail garden as a row of rust-coloured Corten steel boxes set into the slope. Its dark, weathered surfaces echo the painter's concern with light and matter. Beside the permanent galleries, a large temporary exhibition space hosts shows of modern and contemporary art.
