Perez Art Museum Miami
Herzog & de Meuron museum on Biscayne Bay showing modern and contemporary art of the Americas.
The museum descends from the Center for the Fine Arts, opened downtown in 1984 and renamed Miami Art Museum in 1996. A bayfront site in Museum Park was chosen for a purpose-built home, and the Basel practice Herzog & de Meuron produced a raised concrete box under a deep timber canopy, its columns hung with vertical gardens by the botanist Patrick Blanc. The institution took its present name after a gift of works and funds from the developer Jorge M. Perez, and opened in December 2013.
The collection concentrates on art of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries with an emphasis on the Atlantic rim: the Caribbean, Latin America, North America, Africa and Europe. Galleries are arranged as a sequence of overlapping rooms rather than a single route, and the shaded terraces give views across Biscayne Bay towards the port. Alongside changing exhibitions the museum runs a research library, a learning centre and free late opening on Thursday evenings.
