Montenegrin National Theatre
Montenegro's national drama company, playing on a main stage and studio stage in central Podgorica.
The Montenegrin National Theatre was founded in 1953 as the city theatre of Titograd, the name Podgorica carried in the Yugoslav period, and took its present national title in 1969. It gathered leading actors from across Montenegro and was given the task of producing drama, touring smaller towns and maintaining the country's theatrical heritage. The company performs in Montenegrin and works largely in the repertory tradition, mixing domestic playwrights with European and world classics across a season that runs from autumn to early summer.
The theatre building in central Podgorica burnt down in 1989 and was rebuilt on the same site, reopening in May 1997 with Njegoš's verse drama The Mountain Wreath, directed by Branislav Mićunović. The reconstructed house contains a main auditorium, the Velika scena, and a smaller studio stage used for chamber pieces and new writing. Several productions are played with English surtitles, and the company also tours to venues elsewhere in Montenegro, including guest performances in small inland municipalities.
