National Theatre of Kosovo
Kosovo's only public theatre, playing drama on Mother Teresa Square since 1946.
The National Theatre of Kosovo grew out of the People's Provincial Theatre founded at Prizren in October 1945. The company moved to Pristina the following year, and after building work was interrupted and resumed the house reopened on its present site in 1949. It stands on the pedestrian stretch of Mother Teresa Square, its plain modernist front set back behind a paved forecourt that is a standing meeting point in the city centre.
It is the only publicly funded theatre in Kosovo and is financed by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport. Since its founding the company has staged more than four hundred premieres, working in Albanian and, for part of its history, also in Serbian and Turkish. The repertoire mixes Albanian plays, classic European drama and new writing, and the main auditorium also hosts guest companies and the performances of the Prishtina International Theatre Festival and other visiting programmes.
