Internationaal Theater Amsterdam
Amsterdam's municipal theatre on Leidseplein, home of the ITA Ensemble and its international programme.
Internationaal Theater Amsterdam is the city theatre company formed in 2018 from the merger of Toneelgroep Amsterdam and the Stadsschouwburg. Its resident ITA Ensemble performs a repertoire of classic and contemporary drama, often in productions that tour widely in Europe; guest programming brings in Dutch and international theatre, dance and festivals. Performances are staged in the historic horseshoe auditorium and in the Rabozaal, a larger flexible hall added behind the old building in 2009.
The building on Leidseplein, known as the Stadsschouwburg, opened in 1894 to designs by Jan Springer and Abraham Salm, replacing an earlier theatre destroyed by fire. Springer's neo-Renaissance exterior in red brick and light stone was criticised at the time, and the intended decorative tower was never completed. The front balcony has long been used by Ajax and by the Dutch national football team to greet crowds on the square below.
