Teatro Municipal de Lima
Lima's municipal theatre of 1920, rebuilt after a fire and home to the city's opera and ballet.
The theatre was built from 1915 on the site of the demolished Teatro Olimpo and opened on 28 July 1920 as the Teatro Forero, named after Manuel María Forero Osorio, who designed it. Its first season was given by an Italian opera company with a performance of Verdi's Aida. The Metropolitan Municipality of Lima acquired the building in 1929 and renamed it the Teatro Municipal. The horseshoe auditorium, with tiers of boxes under a painted ceiling, holds close to 1,200 people.
A fire on 2 August 1998 destroyed much of the interior and the theatre stood closed for more than a decade before a reconstruction returned it to use in 2010. It is the principal stage for the Ballet Municipal de Lima and for the city's opera season, and also hosts concerts, drama and the National Symphony Orchestra. A small museum attached to the building displays costumes, posters and documents from its history.
