Centro Cultural Teatro Guaíra
Paraná's state theatre complex, home to the symphony orchestra and the Balé Teatro Guaíra.
A theatre called Guayra has stood on this block of central Curitiba since the 1880s. The present complex was designed by the Paraná architect Rubens Meister and built in stages from the early 1950s: the smaller Salvador de Ferrante auditorium, known as the Guairinha, came first, while the main hall, the Auditório Bento Munhoz da Rocha Neto or Guairão, was inaugurated in 1974. With more than two thousand seats it is among the largest theatres in Brazil.
The centre is run by the Paraná state government and also takes in the Glauco Flores de Sá Brito mini-auditorium and the nearby Teatro José Maria Santos. Its resident companies are the Orquestra Sinfônica do Paraná, the Balé Teatro Guaíra and the G2 dance company, which perform alongside touring drama, musicals and concerts. A dance school attached to the theatre trains students from the state, and many productions are staged free of charge.
