Centro Cultural Gabriela Mistral (GAM)
Theatre, dance and music complex on the Alameda, rebuilt inside a 1972 modernist landmark.
GAM is one of Santiago's busiest performing arts centres, programming theatre, dance, classical and popular music, family shows and free visual arts exhibitions across several halls, plus a public library and rehearsal rooms. Its stages host both Chilean companies and international touring work, and much of the ground-level plaza space is open to passers-by without a ticket. The centre is run by a foundation under an agreement with the Ministry of Cultures, Arts and Heritage.
The building was raised in 275 days in 1971-72 to host the third UNCTAD conference, a rapid public works project whose steel structure and exposed concrete became a symbol of the period. Renamed the Diego Portales Building after the 1973 coup, it served as the seat of the military junta and later the Ministry of Defence. A fire in 2006 gutted part of the complex; a reconstruction led by Cristián Fernández Eyzaguirre wrapped the surviving frame in a rusted steel skin and reopened it as GAM in 2010.
