Castro Alves Theatre (Teatro Castro Alves)
Bahia's modernist state theatre at Campo Grande, reopened in 2026 after a full restoration.
The Castro Alves Theatre stands at the head of the Campo Grande square, on the site once occupied by a provincial prison whose railings survive nearby. Designed by José Bina Fonyat Filho in a functionalist idiom, it was inaugurated on 14 July 1958, but a fire days later destroyed the stage and much of the interior. Rebuilding took almost a decade and the theatre returned to use in 1967. Named after the abolitionist poet Antônio de Castro Alves, it is the largest performance complex in the north-east of Brazil and is listed by IPHAN.
The complex holds a main auditorium of about 1,500 seats, the smaller Sala do Coro, a foyer used for exhibitions, and the open-air Concha Acústica built into the slope behind, long associated with Bahian popular music. After a fire damaged the roof in 2023 the theatre closed for the largest structural work in its history, including a new roof, a raised stage house and improved access; it reopened on 1 July 2026. Its programme spans orchestral concerts, dance, drama, opera and popular music.
