Amare
Music and dance house on the Spuiplein, home of Nederlands Dans Theater and the Residentie Orkest.
Amare opened on the Spuiplein in The Hague in 2021 as a combined performance and education building. It holds the Danstheater, the Concertzaal, the Conservatoriumzaal and a studio theatre, together with rehearsal rooms and classrooms for the Royal Conservatoire. Nederlands Dans Theater and the Residentie Orkest are both resident here, so contemporary dance and symphonic concerts share the same foyers with student recitals, jazz, world music, family programmes and spoken-word events.
The building replaced the 1987 Dr Anton Philipszaal and Lucent Danstheater on the same square and was designed by NOAHH with Jo Coenen Architects and Urbanists. Slender white columns and full-height glazing open the foyers to the street, and a broad stair links the levels so passers-by can see rehearsals and workshops from outside. The Danstheater seats about 1,350 and has a deep stage built for dance; the Concertzaal seats about 1,500 and is shaped for orchestral repertoire.
