Kulturfabrik
Cultural centre in a former slaughterhouse, with two stages, a cinema, gallery and artists' studios.
The Kulturfabrik occupies the municipal slaughterhouse of Esch-sur-Alzette, a brick complex of 1886 in the country's southern industrial belt. Artists and associations began using the empty halls in the early 1980s, and the buildings were formally handed to a cultural association in 1998. A conversion by Beng Architectes Associes, completed in the following years, added technical equipment while keeping the industrial brickwork, iron trusses and the outline of the old cattle yard.
The centre now works as a multidisciplinary venue with a main hall taking around 700 standing, a smaller studio theatre, the Kinosch art-house cinema, the Ratelach bar and a gallery for contemporary exhibitions. Its programme runs from rock, metal and electronic concerts to French- and Luxembourgish-language theatre, puppetry, dance and film, and it was one of the principal sites of Esch-sur-Alzette's year as European Capital of Culture in 2022.
