Teatro Juárez
Eclectic 1903 theatre beside the Jardín de la Unión and a principal stage of the Cervantino festival.
Building began in 1873 to a design by the engineer José Noriega and was finished three decades later under Antonio Rivas Mercado. The theatre opened on 27 October 1903 in the presence of President Porfirio Díaz, with a performance of Verdi's Aida. A wide flight of steps rises from Calle de Sopeña to a portico of twelve Doric columns, above which stand bronze figures of the muses. The theatre faces the Jardín de la Unión in the centre of Guanajuato.
Inside, the vestibule and staircases are treated in a French manner with bronze, marble and heavy timber, while the auditorium turns to a Moorish idiom of carved and painted woodwork, arabesques and coloured glass. The horseshoe hall carries four tiers of boxes and seats around a thousand. The theatre is used for opera, concerts, dance and drama through the year, and is one of the principal stages of the Festival Internacional Cervantino each October.
