Andrej Bagar Theatre
Nitra's regional repertory theatre in a large late-modernist house opened on Svätoplukovo square in 1992.
The company was founded in 1949 as a touring ensemble and settled in Nitra in 1960. In 1979 it took the name of Andrej Bagar, the actor, director and teacher who helped shape professional theatre in Slovakia. For decades it played in a converted older house on the edge of the centre, while a purpose-built theatre was planned from 1981 and begun in 1982. It is a repertory company with a resident acting ensemble presenting classic and contemporary drama.
The present building on Svätoplukovo námestie was designed by a team from the Cultural Planning Institute in Bratislava, Juraj Hlavica, Márius Žitňanský and Štefánia Rosincová, and opened on 19 September 1992 with Jozef Hollý's comedy Geľo Sebechlebský. It is among the largest theatre buildings in the country, with a main auditorium, a studio stage and generous foyers. The theatre also hosts the annual international festival Divadelná Nitra, held in the city each autumn.
