National Theatre Tuzla
Repertory company founded in 1949, playing drama and children's shows in a 290-seat house.
The National Theatre in Tuzla was formally registered in 1949, growing out of the drama section of the Mitar Trifunović-UČo cultural society. Its first production was staged with a company of only three actors in a converted cinema. The theatre moved into its present building in the centre of Tuzla, on Pozorišna street beside Trg slobode, where the opening premiere was given on 30 May 1953. The auditorium seats 290 people, with 220 places in the stalls and a further 70 in the balcony.
The company works as a repertory ensemble, producing new plays alongside classics of the south Slav stage such as Ivo Brešan's Hamlet in the Village of Mrduša Donja and comedies by Branislav Nušić. A parallel strand of children's and family productions plays in daytime slots. The theatre tours regularly to other Bosnian cities and hosts visiting companies in return, and it remains one of the longest-running theatre institutions in the north-east of the country.
