Teatro General San Martín
Modernist city theatre on Avenida Corrientes with four halls and resident dance and puppet companies.
The Teatro General San Martín was designed by Mario Roberto Álvarez with Macedonio Oscar Ruiz and opened on Avenida Corrientes in 1960. Its glazed, deeply recessed front and slender concrete frame made it a landmark of Argentine rationalist architecture, and the long foyer running through the block links the theatre to the Centro Cultural General San Martín behind it. The building was closed for a lengthy refurbishment and returned to full use at the end of the 2010s.
The theatre is the main house of the Complejo Teatral de Buenos Aires, the city's municipal theatre group. Four auditoria sit inside: the Sala Martín Coronado with about 1,000 seats, the Sala Casacuberta, the studio-sized Sala Cunill Cabanellas and the Sala Leopoldo Lugones, which runs a repertory film programme. Two resident companies work here, the Ballet Contemporáneo and the puppet group, and the halls and galleries also host exhibitions and concerts.
