Church of St John at Kaneo
Byzantine church of the 13th century on a cliff above Lake Ohrid, part of the UNESCO site.
Dedicated to Saint John the Theologian, the church stands on a rocky headland between the Kaneo fishing settlement and the old town of Ohrid. It was built in the thirteenth century, before the Ottoman conquest, and combines a cross-in-square plan with an octagonal drum and dome. The exterior is banded in stone and brick with recessed arches, ceramic decoration and small colonnettes, a treatment typical of late Byzantine building in the region.
Fragments of fresco painting survive inside, including figures of church fathers in the sanctuary and scenes attributed to the fourteenth century, uncovered during conservation in the twentieth century. The church lies within the UNESCO World Heritage property covering the natural and cultural heritage of the Ohrid region and is reached on foot along the lakeside path from the harbour or down from the Plaoshnik plateau. It remains in use for occasional services.
