Utzon Center
Jørn Utzon's final building, on the Aalborg waterfront, showing architecture and design.
The Utzon Center opened in May 2008 on the Aalborg waterfront, a short distance from the shipyard where Jørn Utzon spent his childhood as the son of a naval engineer. He designed it together with his son Kim Utzon, and it became his last completed work; he died in November of the same year. Four linked white buildings gather around a sheltered courtyard, each carrying a differently curved aluminium roof that draws daylight down into the rooms below.
Inside are two exhibition halls, an auditorium, a library and a tall studio used by architecture students from Aalborg University, along with a boat hall displaying wooden vessels connected with the Utzon family. The changing programme covers architecture, design and building culture, and includes a long-running display on the Sydney Opera House, the project that made Utzon internationally known. A shop and the restaurant JØRN occupy the ground floor, and the courtyard is open to passers-by.
