Alvar Aalto Museum
Architecture and design museum in a building by Alvar Aalto, now part of the Aalto2 Museum Centre.
The Alvar Aalto Museum was founded in 1966 and moved in 1973 into a building designed by Aalto himself, on the museum hill beside the university campus he also planned. Jyväskylä was where Aalto opened his first office in 1923, and the town holds more of his buildings than anywhere else. The museum keeps the architect's drawings, furniture, glass and light fittings, and it is run by the Alvar Aalto Foundation, which also looks after his house and studio in Helsinki and the Experimental House at Muuratsalo.
In 2023 the museum reopened as part of Aalto2 Museum Centre, in which a new glazed link joins it to the neighbouring Museum of Central Finland, another Aalto design of 1961. The permanent display AALTO - Work and Life follows his career and working methods, with models, prototypes and archive material, while the adjoining museum covers the region's history. A shop, café and changing exhibitions on architecture and design occupy the shared entrance building.
