Palacio Sara Braun
French-style mansion of the Patagonian wool boom on the main square of Punta Arenas.
The palace was built between 1895 and 1905 for Sara Braun, widow of the sheep-farming magnate José Nogueira and one of the wealthiest figures of Chilean Patagonia. The French architect Numa Mayer designed it in a neoclassical manner, and much of the material, from the marble and parquet to the furnishings and fabrics, was shipped from Europe. It stands on the Plaza Muñoz Gamero at the heart of Punta Arenas and is protected as a national monument.
Part of the building has housed the Club de la Unión since the 1970s, while another wing operates as the Hotel José Nogueira, and visitors can tour the historic rooms on two floors. The route takes in the reception hall, the music room, the board room and the billiard room, with their original panelling, stucco ceilings and imported furniture, giving a picture of the wealth generated in Magallanes by sheep farming and shipping around the turn of the twentieth century.
