Eden Project
Giant biomes housing rainforest and Mediterranean plants in a former clay pit.
The Eden Project fills a reclaimed china clay pit near St Austell with two vast enclosures made of linked geodesic domes. Clad in inflated ETFE cells on a steel frame, they recreate natural biomes: the Rainforest Biome is one of the largest indoor rainforests in the world, while the Mediterranean Biome holds plants from warm temperate regions. Outdoor gardens add native Cornish species and plants with remarkable stories.
Run by the charity the Eden Trust, the site opened fully in March 2001 and has become a symbol of regeneration and environmental education. Later additions such as The Core, an education building opened in 2005, host exhibitions and learning programmes, and the site runs a year-round calendar of seasonal events.
