Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen
Mirrored bowl-shaped art store by MVRDV where the whole Boijmans collection can be viewed.
The Depot is the storage building of Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen and the first art depot in the world designed to be entered by the public. Opened in 2021 beside the museum in Rotterdam's Museumpark, it holds more than 150,000 objects from the municipal collection. Instead of a curated hang, visitors move through glazed storage compartments, conservation studios and packing areas, seeing paintings on racks, furniture on shelves and crates in transit. Guided routes and self-guided visits both take in the working areas.
MVRDV designed the building as a rounded bowl that widens as it rises, clad in 1,664 mirrored panels that reflect the park, the surrounding museums and the Rotterdam skyline. The narrow footprint was chosen to limit the loss of parkland. Inside, a criss-crossing stairway threads through an atrium hung with display cases, linking thirteen climate zones tuned to different materials. A rooftop restaurant and a birch wood garden crown the structure, giving views across the city centre.
