Palazzo Pubblico
San Marino's neo-Gothic government palace on Piazza della Libertà, seat of the Captains Regent.
The Palazzo Pubblico replaced the medieval Domus Magna Comunis of 1380 to 1392 on the same site above Piazza della Libertà. The Roman architect Francesco Azzurri designed the new building in the manner of the town halls of the Italian communes, and it was raised between 1884 and 1894. At the inauguration on 30 September 1894 the poet Giosuè Carducci delivered the address. A thorough restoration directed by Gae Aulenti was completed in 1996.
The square-cut front of Istrian and Titano stone carries three pointed arches at ground level, a row of mullioned windows and a crenellated clock tower. From the balcony above the entrance the new Captains Regent are proclaimed each 1 April and 1 October. Inside are the Hall of the Grand and General Council, the Voting Hall and the Council of XII chamber, hung with works by Emilio Retrosi and others. The ceremonial changing of the Guard of the Rock takes place outside in the summer months.
