Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ
Neo-Byzantine cathedral with six domes and four belfries, consecrated in Podgorica in 2013.
The Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ rises on the west bank of the Morača in Podgorica's Novi Grad district, and is the largest church in Montenegro. Work began in 1993 to a design by the Belgrade architect Predrag Ristić, with Jovan Popović as co-architect, and continued for two decades. The building is a modern reading of the neo-Byzantine manner in white stone, with six domes, four bell towers carrying a large peal of bells, and carved portals and window frames worked in a deliberately archaic idiom.
It was consecrated in 2013, in the year marking the 1,700th anniversary of the Edict of Milan, at a service attended by the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew and the Serbian Patriarch Irinej. The interior is covered with gilded mosaic and fresco work and lit by very large chandeliers. Relics kept in the cathedral include a fragment of the True Cross and remains associated with Saint Sava. A crypt beneath the nave holds the tomb of Metropolitan Amfilohije Radović, who oversaw much of the building campaign.
