V&A Dundee
Scotland’s design museum, in Kengo Kuma’s ship-like building on the Tay.
V&A Dundee opened on Dundee's waterfront in September 2018. It was Scotland's first design museum and the first Victoria and Albert museum anywhere outside London. The building was designed by the Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, his first in the UK, and he pictured it as a 'living room for the city'. Its layered concrete walls lean outwards and are said to recall Scotland's coastal cliffs, and the museum reaches out towards the River Tay.
Inside, the free Scottish Design Galleries show how Scottish design has shaped everyday life, fashion, engineering and architecture, both at home and around the world. Alongside them, major ticketed exhibitions change through the year and draw on the V&A's collections and international partners. The museum stands beside RRS Discovery and has become the centrepiece of Dundee's regenerated waterfront.
