Njegoš Mausoleum
Mountain-top mausoleum by Ivan Meštrović on Lovćen, reached through a tunnel of 461 steps.
The mausoleum holds the remains of Petar II Petrović-Njegoš, prince-bishop of Montenegro and author of the epic poem The Mountain Wreath. It stands at about 1,660 metres on Jezerski vrh, the second summit of Lovćen, replacing a small chapel Njegoš had built there and which was damaged in the First World War. The monument was designed by the Croatian sculptor Ivan Meštrović, completed after his death and opened to the public in 1974.
Visitors reach the platform through a tunnel cut into the rock and a flight of 461 steps. Two granite caryatids in Montenegrin dress flank the entrance to the chamber, where a seated figure of Njegoš beneath a gilded mosaic canopy stands above the crypt. A terrace behind the building gives wide views over the Bay of Kotor, the Cetinje plain and, in clear weather, into Albania and Croatia. The site is managed by the National Museum of Montenegro.
