Cetinje Monastery
Seat of the Metropolitanate of Montenegro, holding a treasury of relics and Petrović manuscripts.
Cetinje Monastery stands at the foot of Orlov Krš in the old royal capital and is the seat of the Metropolitanate of Montenegro and the Littoral. Ivan Crnojević, lord of Zeta, built the first monastery in 1484 after moving his court inland from Žabljak Crnojevića, and the community was formally established the following year. That first church was a three-aisled basilica with a dome, some 20 metres long, carrying Renaissance detail brought from the Adriatic coast.
Ottoman campaigns destroyed the medieval buildings, and the present monastery was raised on a neighbouring site between 1701 and 1704 by Metropolitan Danilo Petrović-Njegoš, who reused carved stone from the Crnojević foundation, including a portal bearing Ivan Crnojević's name. Further rebuilding followed in the 1740s under Metropolitan Sava, and the façades took their current form in 1927. The monastery treasury holds the relics of Saint Peter of Cetinje, a fragment of the True Cross and the right hand of Saint John the Baptist, together with vestments, printed books and charters.
